What to do next

If you are leaving an advisor, compare the new advisor’s fiduciary status, fee model, scope, service calendar, and transfer plan before signing.

The letter is one step of four. Send it after the new account is open and the transfer signed, not before — the order that avoids the retention call and how the transfer itself works. If you were billed in advance for a quarter you did not finish, ask for the refund in this same letter: what Form ADV Item 5.D requires.

Before the termination letter, there is a cheaper letter. The fee negotiation kit writes a letter that cites what SEC-registered firms actually disclose at your balance and asks for a specific number in writing.
