Is TIAA Wealth Management a Fiduciary? What Its Own Form CRS Says (2026)

Guides › Financial Advisor Fees

Updated September 18, 2026. Quick answer: It depends which hat TIAA Wealth Management is wearing. As your investment adviser, TIAA Wealth Management owes you a fiduciary duty under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940. As your broker-dealer, TIAA Wealth Management owes you Regulation Best Interest, a real and enforceable standard, but not a fiduciary duty. TIAA Wealth Management’s own Form CRS states: “When we provide you with a recommendation as your broker-dealer or act as your investment adviser, we have to act in your best interest and not put our interest ahead of yours.”

How it’s registered

From Form CRS (Client Relationship Summary) (January 1, 2026 (document reads “Client relationship summary, as of January 1, 2026″; a trailing exhibit describes changes since the prior version last updated July 31, 2023)): “TC Services is an affiliate of TIAA and is registered as a broker-dealer and investment adviser with the Securities and Exchange Commission.”

The standard of conduct, in its own words

“When we provide you with a recommendation as your broker-dealer or act as your investment adviser, we have to act in your best interest and not put our interest ahead of yours.”

On commissions: “Brokerage accounts offered by us (including retail, IRA and accounts associated with employer-sponsored retirement plans) Account fees, brokerage commissions, investment expenses, transaction fees”

What this means for what you pay

Fiduciary status is one input, not the whole picture. TIAA Wealth Management discloses a published fee that runs $4,500 a year on a $500,000 account; see the full dollar breakdown from TIAA Wealth Management’s own fee disclosure before deciding whether the standard of conduct here changes your answer.

If the answer above changes your mind about staying, read the general mechanics of switching financial advisors, or use a dated termination letter once you decide.
