Guides › Switching Financial Advisors
Updated September 29, 2026. Quick answer: leaving an advisor takes four steps, and the old firm does almost none of them: pick where the money is going, open the account there, let the new firm pull your holdings across in kind through ACATS, then confirm the old advisory fee has stopped. We have published a step-by-step exit guide for 189 firms, each built from the firm’s own disclosures and the published fee schedule of whoever holds the account. In 119 of the 189 guides the firm’s own charge for ending the relationship is $0.00; a transfer charge, where there is one, is a separate line. The table below lists every firm A to Z with the cost sentence its guide states.
The four steps every exit shares
- Pick the destination. Choose the new advisor or brokerage first. It is the only step that takes judgment; everything after it is paperwork. If you are unsure what a replacement should cost, compare advisor fees first.
- Open the account at the new firm. Match the registration exactly (the same names, the same account type), and have a recent statement from the old account to hand, because the transfer form asks for the old account number.
- Transfer in kind through ACATS. You sign the transfer form at the new firm and it pulls the account; you do not need the old advisor’s permission. Under FINRA Rule 11870 the old firm has one business day to validate the instruction or take exception to it, and then, in the rule’s words, “Within three business days following the validation of a transfer instruction, the carrying member must complete the transfer of the customer’s security account assets to the receiving member.” Moving holdings in kind rather than selling them is what keeps the move from being a taxable event.
- Confirm billing has stopped. Send written notice to end the advisory agreement, then check the final statement: many agreements refund a prepaid fee pro rata. What you are owed when you leave explains how to find your refund terms.
The full walk-through, with what breaks the timeline, is in switching financial advisors. If you would rather skip the conversation with your advisor entirely, see how to fire a financial advisor.
The two tax traps
A transfer in kind is not a sale, so it does not create a tax bill on its own. Two things can turn it into one. First, some holdings cannot move to the new firm as they are, typically the old firm’s proprietary funds, and they may have to be sold on the way out: what will not transfer in kind lists the categories and how to find yours. Second, a new advisor may want to rebuild a taxable account into their own model, which realises gains: does switching advisors trigger taxes covers the four cases where it does.
The two documents, written for you
The advisor termination letter generator writes the notice that ends the agreement, and the termination receipt email asks the old firm to confirm in writing that the advisory fee has stopped. Both run in your browser.

| TD Wealth | TD Wealth’s US advisory business is TD Private Client Wealth LLC (“TDPCW”), whose accounts are custodied and cleared at Pershing LLC (a different legal entity from Pershing Advisor Solutions LLC, so that firm’s separately published $150 figure does not apply here). |
| Texas Capital Private Wealth Advisors | If you are custodied at Pershing, budget $150.00 per account, per Pershing Advisor Solutions LLC’s own current fee schedule. |
| The Wealth Consulting Group | If you are custodied at Schwab, budget $50.00 per account, per Charles Schwab & Co., Inc.’s own current fee schedule. |

| TIAA Wealth Management | TC Services’ own Private Asset Management (PAM) brochure does not state a separate proration or refund clause for ending the advisory relationship itself, so that step is an honest gap rather than a confirmed $0. |
| Tiedemann Advisors | If you are custodied at Schwab, budget $50.00 per account for a full outgoing transfer, per Schwab’s own July 2026 pricing guide. |
| Titan | The brochure states its own dollar figure directly: “Outgoing ACATs are subject to… a one-time transaction fee of $100,” confirmed on Titan’s own separately published Fee Schedule, which also lists a $75 Outgoing Non-ACAT Transfer fee and a $100 IRA Termination Fee. |
| Transamerica Financial Advisors | TFA publishes NFS’s client fee schedule directly on its own public disclosures page: $125.00 per event for an Outgoing Account Transfer Fee, and a separate $125.00 per event Retirement Account Termination fee. |

| U.S. Bank | U.S. Bancorp Investments prices the combined “account transfers and IRA closeout” charge at $95 per account, and that figure is identical whether you hold a self-directed brokerage account or work with a full-service advisor: the firm publishes the same number in both fee schedules. |
| UBS | UBS prices the account transfer at $95, the same figure the firm has published since at least 2020, and layers a separate $125 annual IRA fee ($100 with e-delivery) on top if you are closing a retirement account rather than moving it whole. |
| United Wealth Management | If you are custodied at Wells Fargo Clearing Services, budget $95.00 per account, per United Brokerage Services, Inc.’s own Form ADV. |

| Voya Financial Advisors | VFA’s own Schedule of Miscellaneous Account and Service Fees (effective October 1, 2025) states the transfer cost directly, not through a separate custodian document: $110.00 per “Outgoing transfer,” and a separate $95.00 IRA termination fee. |

Every cost sentence comes from the linked guide, which cites the firm’s own disclosures and the published fee schedule it relies on. The transfer timetable is FINRA Rule 11870, Customer Account Transfer Contracts. The guides span 19 published research waves, so fee schedule dates differ by firm.
Methodology
This page is generated from the published exit guides themselves. Each of the 185 quoted sentences was read from the live guide’s own quick answer and is reproduced exactly; 4 guides state their figures in a way this table cannot reproduce exactly, and for those the cell says so rather than paraphrasing. The count of guides showing $0.00 for ending the relationship is computed from each guide’s own fee table. Counts are computed at build time, never typed.
