Updated October 30, 2026. Quick answer: Plan B retirees of the West Virginia State Police Retirement System get an annual annuity adjustment of 1% of the retirement award each July 1, fixed in West Virginia Code 15-2A-7 with no board vote and no index. A normal retirant must be 63 or older, adjustments are not retroactive, and a retirant who chooses the deferred annuity under section 15-2A-8 gets none (the brochure words this for under 20 years of service). The July 2027 adjustment follows the same 1% rule.
The rule in the statute
The statute for the system reads: “is eligible to receive an annual retirement annuity adjustment equal to one percent of his or her retirement award or surviving spouse award. The adjustments may not be retroactive. Yearly adjustments shall begin upon July 1, of each year.” On a first partial year it says: “that first annuity adjustment will be a pro rata share of the full year’s annuity adjustment.”
What the Plan B brochure adds
The Plan B brochure says: “Every retiree of the system who is 63 years of age or older and who is retired under normal retirement criteria will receive an annual retirement annuity adjustment of 1% payable on July 1 of each year after the retiree attains 63 years of age.” It adds a limit: “Any retiree with less than 20 years of service choosing to receive a deferred annuity is not eligible to receive the annual annuity adjustment.”
What this page does not cover
This page covers Plan B under Article 2A. Plan A under a separate article of the Code was not reviewed. The brochure read is dated September 2023, so confirm it against the current statute.
Where 2027 stands
The July 2027 adjustment is set at 1% by the statute, with no board vote or index, and this page updates if the Legislature amends the section.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a CPI-linked increase. The statute fixes it at one percent.
- Assuming a deferred annuity gets the adjustment. The brochure excludes a retiree with under 20 years of service who chooses one.
- Applying the 1% to someone who retired under Plan A. This page covers Plan B only.
