Social Security Earnings Test — Quick Check & Withholding Estimator

Estimate how much of your Social Security may be withheld this year if you work before Full Retirement Age (FRA). Enter the current-year limits below (they change annually).

Inputs

Enter this year’s earnings limits

Enter your numbers to see estimated withholding…
How the earnings test works (simplified)
  • Under FRA all year: $1 withheld for every $2 over the limit.
  • Year you reach FRA: $1 withheld for every $3 over the limit (counting earnings before the month you reach FRA).
  • Withheld benefits are not lost; after FRA, your benefit is recalculated to credit months withheld.

Enter the current-year limits (they change annually). This tool is an estimate and ignores mid-year timing nuances.

What to do with this

Coordinate claiming with work. Read Social Security Timing Basics, then check how income affects taxes in the SS Taxability Calculator.

The earnings test withholds; it does not delete. Most people are told the opposite.

Benefits withheld before full retirement age are recomputed later, which changes whether claiming early is actually a mistake. The advisers below pay for the introduction. It is free to you, and it is not the only way to find an adviser.

Before you start, what actually happens. The form is run by Kapitalwise, our advisor-matching partner. Kapitalwise sends your details to advisers who pay for the introduction, so expect calls and texts. Clear Money Guide is paid when you submit the form, whether or not you ever hire anyone. This is free to you and there is no obligation to hire anyone.

The Kapitalwise form opens here — you stay on this page.

What happens when you press the button

It asks about nine questions — age, investable assets, location — then your name, email and phone number, and verifies the phone by text. Nothing loads and nothing reaches Kapitalwise until you press the button.

Different test, same benefit: once benefits start, taxation depends on combined income — run the provisional income calculator.

When to claim Social Security, on your own numbers

Published breakeven ages cluster at 78 to 82 by assuming the cheques you take early earn nothing. The claiming age calculator takes your own benefit from your SSA statement and lets you charge an opportunity cost — at 5% the 62-versus-70 breakeven moves from about 80 to about 90. The pairwise cases sit around it: 62 vs 67, 67 vs 70, 62 vs 70, and claiming as a married couple.
