Updated September 30, 2026. Quick answer: Your required minimum distribution is your traditional IRA balance on December 31 of last year divided by an IRS number for your age. At age 75 the Uniform Lifetime number is 24.6, so $100,000 gives $4,065. Enter your own balance and age below. It uses Table III, the one most owners use, and it does not cover an owner whose spouse is the only beneficiary and is more than 10 years younger.

The calculator divides your balance by the Table III denominator for your age and rounds to the dollar. The table is the one printed in Publication 590-B (2025). It runs on this page and sends nothing anywhere.
The formula the calculator uses
The IRS RMD FAQ page says: “Generally, a RMD is calculated for each account by dividing the prior December 31 balance of that IRA or retirement plan account by a life expectancy factor that the IRS publishes in Tables in Publication 590-B, Distributions from Individual Retirement Arrangements (IRAs) .” For the Uniform Lifetime table (Table III) it says to “use this if your spouse is not your sole beneficiary or your spouse is not more than 10 years younger”. Publication 590-B says: “Figure your required minimum distribution for each year by dividing the IRA account balance (defined next) as of the close of business on December 31 of the preceding year by the applicable denominator or life expectancy.” Which age to use: “If you are figuring your required minimum distribution for 2026, use your age as of your birthday in 2026.” “For each subsequent year, use your age as of your birthday in the subsequent year.”
A worked example from the IRS
Pub 590-B gives this one: “Example. You own a traditional IRA. Your account balance at the end of 2025 was $100,000. You are married and your spouse, who is the sole beneficiary of your IRA, is 6 years younger than you. You turn 75 years old in 2026. You use Table III. Your applicable denominator is 24.6. Your required minimum distribution for 2026 would be $4,065 ($100,000 ÷ 24.6).” Typing 100000 and 75 into the calculator returns the same $4,065.
What the number looks like at four ages and three balances
| Age in 2026 | Table III denominator | RMD on $250,000 | RMD on $500,000 | RMD on $1,000,000 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 73 | 26.5 | $9,434 (computed) | $18,868 (computed) | $37,736 (computed) |
| 75 | 24.6 | $10,163 (computed) | $20,325 (computed) | $40,650 (computed) |
| 80 | 20.2 | $12,376 (computed) | $24,752 (computed) | $49,505 (computed) |
| 85 | 16.0 | $15,625 (computed) | $31,250 (computed) | $62,500 (computed) |
| 90 | 12.2 | $20,492 (computed) | $40,984 (computed) | $81,967 (computed) |
The first two columns are Table III, Publication 590-B (2025), Appendix B. The three dollar columns are computed here, not published by the IRS: each balance divided by the denominator, rounded to the dollar. The full table through age 120 is on the RMD table page.
When this calculator is the wrong one
A different table applies in one case: “If the sole beneficiary of your IRA is your spouse and your spouse is more than 10 years younger than you, use the applicable denominator from Table II in Appendix B.” That case is worked on the younger-spouse RMD page. If you inherited the IRA, use the inherited IRA RMD calculator instead. For a first-year decision between April 1 and December 31, see the first RMD calculator.
Your starting age
Pub 590-B (2025) states the age at which required distributions begin as 73, and it prints Table III from age 72. The calculator starts at 73 and says so if you enter less. Whether your own first distribution falls at 73 or later depends on when you were born, which the RMD basics page sets out.
Common mistakes
- Using this year’s balance. The balance is the one on December 31 of last year.
- Entering the age you were last year. Use the age you reach on your birthday this year.
- Using this calculator for an inherited IRA. A beneficiary uses a different table.
