Updated October 30, 2026. Quick answer: Oklahoma TRS members who joined on or after 11/1/11 may retire at age 65 or when age is at least 60 and years of creditable service total at least 90 points. Members who joined from 7/1/92 to before 11/1/11 may retire at age 62 or at 90 points, and those who joined before 7/1/92 at age 62 or 80 points. Members who joined before November 1, 2017 vest with five years of eligible service credit, and those who join on or after that date with seven. The pension is 2% for each year of service.
Retirement age by join date
“Those who joined TRS on or after 11/1/11 may retire at age 65 or when the member’s age is at least 60 and years of creditable service total at least 90 points (i.e., age 60 + 30 service years = 90 points).” “Those who joined TRS on or after 7/1/92 and before 11/1/11 may retire at age 62 or when the member’s age and years of creditable service total 90 points (i.e., age 55 + 35 service years = 90 points).” “Those who joined TRS prior to 7/1/92 may retire at age 62 or when the member’s age and years of creditable service total 80 points (i.e., age 60 + 20 service years = 80 points).”
Early retirement
“A member may be eligible for retirement in one of three ways: (1) a member may choose to take an early, reduced retirement benefit, (2) qualify for disability retirement, or (3) qualify for a regular, unreduced retirement benefit.” “Reduced benefits are available for members who have not reached full retirement eligibility under regular retirement. Reduction factors vary depending on age and date of membership when joining TRS.” “If a member terminates employment before reaching regular retirement age, the member may wait (without working) to retire until they reach their regular retirement age to avoid a reduced retirement benefit.”
Vesting
“Members who join TRS prior to November 1, 2017, and have accumulated a minimum of five (5) years of eligible service credit in the public schools of Oklahoma shall be vested in TRS”. Members who join on or after “November 1, 2017, will become vested when they have accumulated seven (7) years of eligible service credit.”
What the pension is based on
“2% x (service years) x (final average salary) ÷ 12 = monthly benefit. The 2% factor is fixed; however, benefits will vary depending on the number of service years and the final average salary.” “Combination 80 members (joined prior to 7/1/92) use their highest three salaries in the average salary calculation. Combination 90 and Combination 90/Minimum Age 60 members use their highest consecutive five salaries in the average salary calculation.”
A worked example with invented numbers
Take an invented TRS member with 30 years of service. That is 30 years at 2%, or 60% (computed) of a final average salary of $70,000 (invented, for the computation), which comes to $42,000 a year (computed).
What the documents do not say
The early retirement reduction factors by age, and the minimum early retirement ages, are printed only in a table in the handbook, so this page states neither. The handbook’s heading for the newest tier is Age 65 or Combination 90 at Age 60, and it prints no minimum service for that tier beyond the 90 points. Only the member handbook, with plan provisions as of July 1, 2026, was read; the statute was not read. Disability and alternate retirement plans are not covered.
Common mistakes
- Reading 80 or 90 points as an age. Points are age plus years of creditable service.
- Using the five-year vesting rule for a member who joins on or after November 1, 2017. That group needs seven years.
- Assuming a printed early retirement percentage. The handbook says reduction factors vary by age and date of membership.
