Is CIBC Private Wealth Management a Fiduciary? What Its Own Form CRS Says (2026)

Guides › Financial Advisor Fees

Updated September 28, 2026. Quick answer: Mostly yes, with one carve-out. CIBC Private Wealth Management is registered with the SEC only as an investment adviser, so on your advisory account it owes you a fiduciary duty under the Investment Advisers Act of 1940. Its own Form CRS states: “When we act as your investment adviser, we have to act in your best interest and not put our interest ahead of yours.” A limited number of CIBC Private Wealth Management’s financial professionals are separately licensed to sell brokerage products in a different capacity, where the weaker Regulation Best Interest standard, not a fiduciary duty, applies instead.

How it’s registered

From Form CRS, Customer Relationship Summary, CIBC Private Wealth Management (March 31, 2026): “This document summarizes the investment advisory services CIBC Private Wealth Advisors, Inc. (“CIBC PWA”, “we”, “our” or “us”) offers to retail investors as an investment adviser registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission (“SEC”).”

The standard of conduct, in its own words

“When we act as your investment adviser, we have to act in your best interest and not put our interest ahead of yours.”

On commissions: “CIBC Private Wealth Management’s compensation and incentive program is based on a salary and profit-sharing pool and restricted CIBC Stock for certain professionals. Our relationship managers’ compensation is tied to the retention and growth of the client assets entrusted to their care. Investment professionals charged with the management and successes of investment portfolios are provided incentive compensation based upon the overall investment performance of the strategies. Business development professionals typically receive a percentage of revenue on accounts they bring to the firm.”

What this means for what you pay

Fiduciary status is one input, not the whole picture. CIBC Private Wealth Management discloses a published fee that runs $10,000 a year on a $500,000 account, per its own current Form ADV Part 2A (June 22, 2026), cited in Sources below. A dedicated fee page for CIBC Private Wealth Management has not been published on this site yet.

If the answer above changes your mind about staying, read the general mechanics of switching financial advisors, or use a dated termination letter once you decide. A dedicated how-to-leave page for CIBC Private Wealth Management has not been published on this site yet.
