Updated October 30, 2026. Quick answer: A vested Indiana PERF Hybrid member (10 or more years of creditable service) gets a full pension at age 65 with 10 years, at age 60 with 15 years, or at least age 55 when age and total service equal 85 or more (the Rule of 85). Early retirement is available at age 50 with 15 years, with a pension that stays reduced for life. The pension is 1.1 percent of final average earnings, the highest five years, for each year of service.
Full pension
“Age 65 and have ten (10) or more years of creditable and/or eligibility service under PERF Hybrid (or a combination of PERF/TRF Hybrid).” “Age 60 and have 15 or more years of creditable and/or eligibility service under PERF Hybrid (or a combination of PERF/TRF Hybrid).” “At least age 55 and the sum of the member’s age at retirement and their total years of creditable and eligibility service under PERF equal 85 or more (Rule of 85).”
Vesting
“Under State law, vested status is defined as ten (10) or more years of creditable service or combined creditable and eligibility service under PERF.”
Early retirement
“You may be eligible for a reduced pension benefit if you are at least 50 years of age with 15 or more years of creditable and/or eligibility service under PERF Hybrid (or a combination of PERF/TRF Hybrid).” “If you choose to take early retirement, your pension benefit will remain at a reduced level for life, even after reaching 60 years of age.”
What the pension is based on
“The lifetime monthly pension benefit is calculated using your final high-five average salary (earnings), service credit, and a statutory defined rate of 1.1 percent (0.011).” “Benefit multiplier. This amount is 1.1 percent (0.011). It is used in the math formula to calculate your monthly pension benefit.” “Final average earnings (FAE) refer to the highest five (5) years of compensation in a PERF Hybrid covered position.”
A worked example with invented numbers
Take an invented PERF Hybrid member with 30 years of creditable service who retires with a full pension. That is 30 years at 1.1%, or 33% (computed) of a final average salary of $60,000 (invented, for the computation), which comes to $19,800 a year (computed).
What the documents do not say
The early retirement reduction schedule by age, from 50 through 59, is printed only in a table in the handbook, so this page states no percentage. The handbook’s section on early retirement words the Rule of 85 slightly differently from its section on full pension, and this page quotes the full-pension wording. Only the PERF Hybrid handbook effective July 1, 2025 was read; pre-Hybrid PERF rules, the 1977 fund, the teachers fund and the annuity savings account are not covered.
Common mistakes
- Reading 85 as an age. The Rule of 85 needs age 55 or older, and age plus service of 85 or more.
- Expecting the reduction to end at 60. The handbook says an early pension stays at a reduced level for life.
- Using this page for the 1977 Police Officers’ and Firefighters’ Fund or pre-Hybrid rules. It covers the PERF Hybrid plan.
