Updated October 18, 2026. Quick answer: Line 7 copies a number from your Form 1040. Line 8 is a decimal you read from a table printed on the form, based on line 7. Line 9a multiplies line 6 by that decimal, line 9b adds a credit for 2024 expenses paid in 2025 if you have one, and line 9c adds the two.
IRS worksheets read line by line: Form 2441 Credit Limit Worksheet and Form 2441 prior-year expenses worksheet.
What lines 7 to 9c ask for
Line 7 reads “Enter the amount from Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR, line 11a”. Line 8 reads “Enter on line 8 the decimal amount shown below that applies to the amount on line 7.” Line 9a reads “Multiply line 6 by the decimal amount on line 8”. Line 9c reads “Add lines 9a and 9b and enter the result”.
The instructions have no separate paragraph for lines 7, 8, 9a or 9c, so the form’s own captions are the guide for those lines. Line 9b has an instruction paragraph, covered below.
Line 7: Form 1040 line 11a
Line 7 is a copy of one number from your return. The Form 1040 income lines are explained on the Form 1040 lines 9 to 11 page.
Line 8: the decimal amount
The decimal comes from the table printed on the form itself, under the heading “Decimal amount is”, with a row for each range of line 7. The table is a printed table, so read it on your own Form 2441 rather than from a copy of its figures here. Find the row for the amount you entered on line 7, then enter that row’s decimal on line 8.
Line 9a: the credit before any other addition
Line 9a multiplies two numbers you have already found: line 6, from the lines 3 to 6 page, and the decimal on line 8. The limit comes after, on the lines 10 and 11 page.
Line 9b: expenses from 2024 paid in 2025
The form says “If you paid 2024 expenses in 2025, complete Worksheet A in the instructions.” The line then says “Enter the amount from line 13 of the worksheet here.”
The instructions say “If you had qualified expenses for 2024 that you didn’t pay until 2025 and you didn’t claim a credit on the maximum amount of qualified expenses for 2024, you may be able to increase the amount of the credit you can take in 2025.” “To figure the credit, complete Worksheet A at the end of these instructions.” “Enter on line 9b the amount from line 13 of Worksheet A.” Worksheet A is a printed worksheet, so use it from the instructions.
Those 2024 expenses are kept out of line 2: the instructions list “Expenses you incurred in 2024 but didn’t pay until 2025.” as not belonging in column (d), and point to line 9b instead. See the line 2 page.
Line 9c: the total
Line 9c adds lines 9a and 9b, as the caption says: “Add lines 9a and 9b and enter the result”. If you have no 2024 expenses to add, line 9b says to enter zero and “go to line 9c”.
Where the number comes from
Line 7 comes from your Form 1040. Line 8 comes from the form’s table. Line 9a comes from lines 6 and 8. Line 9b comes from Worksheet A, if you need it. Line 9c is the sum of 9a and 9b.
Where it goes next
Line 10 reads “Tax liability limit. Enter the amount from the Credit Limit Worksheet in the instructions”. Line 11 reads “Enter the smaller of line 9c or line 10 here and on Schedule 3 (Form 1040), line 2”. Both are on the lines 10 and 11 page. For the full form, see Form 2441.
Edition and line numbers
This page reads the 2025 Form 2441 (Child and Dependent Care Expenses) and its 2025 instructions, the current files irs.gov served on 2026-10-18. They are the files for the tax year 2025 return, filed in 2026. The form says “Attach to Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR.” Check the tax year printed on the form you are filling in and use the line numbers on that year’s form, because a different year’s form can number or word its lines differently.
Common mistakes
- Using a different line from the Form 1040 for line 7. The form says “Enter the amount from Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR, line 11a”
- Putting 2024 expenses in line 2 instead of using Worksheet A. The instructions say “Enter on line 9b the amount from line 13 of Worksheet A.”
- Treating line 9c as the final credit. Line 11 says “Enter the smaller of line 9c or line 10 here and on Schedule 3 (Form 1040), line 2”
