Form 2441 Credit Limit Worksheet (2025): Line by Line

Updated October 21, 2026. Quick answer: The Credit Limit Worksheet in the Form 2441 instructions caps the child and dependent care credit at your tax. It takes Form 1040 line 18, subtracts the foreign tax credit and one Form 8978 amount, and line 3 goes on Form 2441 line 10. If line 3 is zero or less, you can’t take the credit.

What this worksheet is for

Line 10 of Form 2441 has no number to copy from the return. The instructions say “Complete this worksheet to figure the amount to enter on line 10.”. The line is covered at Form 2441 lines 10 and 11, and the form at Form 2441.

The worksheet line by line

LineWhat the worksheet says
Where it is used“Complete this worksheet to figure the amount to enter on line 10.”
1“Enter the amount from Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR, line 18”
2“Enter the amount from Schedule 3 (Form 1040), line 1 (foreign tax credit) and line 6l (Form 8978, line 14)”
3“Subtract line 2 from line 1.” “Also enter this amount on Form 2441, line 10.”
3, if zero or less“But if zero or less, stop; you can’t take the credit”

A worked example

Illustration, not an IRS example. Every input is invented.

ItemIllustration
Line 1 (an invented input for the computed example: Form 1040 line 18)$3,200
Line 2 (suppose the foreign tax credit is)$200
Line 3, computed: line 1 minus line 2$3,000 (computed)

The $3,000 goes on Form 2441 line 10. The credit on line 11 can be no more than that amount, which is how the tax limit works.

Where the number comes from

Line 1 is the tax on Form 1040 line 18, covered with the other credit lines at Form 1040 lines 19, 20 and 21. Line 2 comes from Schedule 3, covered at Schedule 3 line 1, the foreign tax credit. On the form, line 1 is captioned “Add lines 16 and 17”.

Where it goes next

Line 3 is entered “on Form 2441, line 10.” The credit itself, once limited, goes on Schedule 3 line 2. The decimal and credit before the limit are at Form 2441 lines 7 to 9c.

Edition and line numbers

This page reads the Instructions for Form 2441 (2025), the current file irs.gov served on 2026-10-21 (sha256 in the kit data). The Credit Limit Worksheet in it is for the tax year 2025 return, filed in 2026. Check the tax year printed on the worksheet in your own instructions and use that year’s line numbers, because a different year’s worksheet can number or word its lines differently.

Common mistakes

  • Continuing when line 3 is zero. The worksheet says “But if zero or less, stop; you can’t take the credit”
  • Forgetting the Form 8978 amount. Line 2 includes “line 6l (Form 8978, line 14)”
  • Using the wrong line of the return. Line 1 is “Enter the amount from Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR, line 18”
