Does Colorado Tax Social Security? (2026)

Updated September 5, 2026. Quick answer: Mostly no. Colorado residents age 65+ can subtract their entire taxable Social Security benefit; residents 55-64 can subtract it only up to a $20,000 cap shared with other pension income.

Confidence note: medium. This page is scoped to Social Security taxation specifically. For the state’s full retirement-tax picture (pensions, tax rates, estate and probate), see how Colorado taxes retirement income generally.

How it worksColo. Rev. Stat. § 39-22-104(4)(f) lets a filer age 55-64 subtract the lesser of $20,000 or their pension/annuity/Social Security income; a filer 65 or older can subtract up to $24,000, and for 2022 and later tax years the Colorado Dept. of Revenue’s own guidance confirms that once a 65+ filer’s taxable Social Security alone exceeds $24,000, the full amount of that Social Security is subtractable regardless of the general cap; full exemption in practice for filers 65+.
Income threshold / phase-outAge 55-64: subtract the lesser of $20,000 or the combined pension/SS amount. Age 65+: subtract up to $24,000, or the full Social Security benefit if it alone exceeds $24,000.

Coordinate this with your overall retirement plan

An adviser can help weigh how much of your Social Security income actually reaches you after state tax, whether the timing of other withdrawals affects that, and how it fits the rest of your plan, but that does not replace the numbers in your own return.
