Best States to Retire for Taxes (2026): Ranked for Your Numbers, Not an Average

Updated July 26, 2026. Quick answer (2026): There is no single best state to retire in for taxes, and every published list that claims otherwise is answering a question nobody asked. The ranking depends on your numbers: a retiree drawing $40,000 a year with a $300,000 estate and one drawing $200,000 with a $6,000,000 estate should get different answers, because 13 jurisdictions charge nothing on withdrawals while 13 tax estates at thresholds from $1,000,000 to $15,000,000. Enter your three numbers and this ranks the states for your situation, pushing any state that would tax your estate down the list.

Why the published lists disagree with each other

  • They blend incomparable taxes into one score. An annual income-tax rate and a one-off estate threshold are different units. Averaging them produces a number that is true for nobody.
  • They ignore where you are leaving from. If your current state already exempts retirement withdrawals, the entire income-tax column is zero for you and the list is meaningless.
  • They rarely price the estate threshold at all — which for larger estates is the biggest number on the page.
  • Probate is usually missing entirely, even though it is charged as a percentage of the estate in seven states.

Once you have a shortlist, price the specific move: the retirement tax comparison tool puts any two states side by side, the probate cost calculator works out what settling the estate costs, and the relocation hub has a worked, statute-cited comparison for the corridors retirees actually use. Every state also has its own guide in the 51-state retirement tax table.

Methodology: income figures apply the top of each state’s 2026 schedule and are for ranking, not filing; exclusions and brackets will change your actual bill. Estate thresholds are the 2026 figures in our verified dataset. Property and sales taxes are deliberately excluded because we do not hold verified 2026 data for them, and a ranking that guesses is worse than one that omits. Nothing here is personalized tax advice.
