Ohio SERS Reemployment After Retirement (2026)

Updated October 21, 2026. Quick answer: The Ohio SERS Member Benefits Guide says a retiree who returns to a job covered by SERS, OPERS, STRS, OP&F or HPRS must wait two months from the effective date of retirement or forfeit the pension for that period. A reemployed retiree earns no new service credit, and a private job covered by Social Security does not affect the pension.

What this covers

The Member Benefits Guide has a section headed “REEMPLOYMENT”. It opens: “As a retiree of an Ohio public pension system, the type of job you take after retirement and the timing of your start date can affect your pension benefits.” This page quotes that section. For the wider choices, see Ohio SERS retirement decisions and public pension retirement decisions.

What the guide says, situation by situation

Each row is the guide’s own wording.

SituationWhat the guide says
Private job covered by Social Security“Returning to work in a private sector job covered by Social Security does not affect your SERS pension.”
Job covered by an Ohio system“you must wait two months from your effective date of retirement before being reemployed or you will forfeit your pension for that period of time.” The statute states the rule by month and by employer. Section 3309.341(C) says a retirant who has received an allowance for less than two months when employment begins “shall forfeit the retirement allowance or disability benefit for any month” worked before the two-month period ends, and section 3309.341(B)(1) provides that a retirant “may be employed by a public employer”.
Service credit while reemployed“You do not accrue any additional service credit for the period of reemployment.”
Buying credit or applying for disability“No service credit can be purchased, and reemployed retirees cannot apply for disability benefits.”
Contributions in a SERS-covered job“you must contribute to SERS the same as you did as a member.”
Health care coverage“you temporarily may lose eligibility for SERS’ health care coverage while you are reemployed.”

What you build while reemployed

In a SERS-covered job the guide says “because your pension amount is set, you will accumulate a new benefit that will be paid back to you as a single life annuity.” It adds “You may choose to receive the amount as a lump-sum payment or in fixed monthly payments for the rest of your life.” Section 3309.344(A) adds terms the guide leaves out. The benefit starts on the first day of the month after the latest of three events, one of which is “Attainment by the SERS retirant or other system retirant of age sixty-five”, another a twelve-month wait after the effective date of an earlier benefit of this kind. It also provides that “if the monthly annuity would be less than twenty-five dollars per month, the retirant shall receive a lump sum payment”.

Health care

On health coverage the guide says “Once reemployment ends, your eligibility will be restored.” It also says “This does not impact individuals enrolled in Medicare Part B.” It sends the reader to the Member Health Care Guide for details.

What the guide does not say

The section prints no earnings limit, and it does not say which jobs count as covered by a given system beyond naming the systems. Whether the job you are considering is covered is a question for SERS before you accept it. How the pension is taxed is on how Ohio taxes retirement income.

Edition

This page reads the School Employees Retirement System of Ohio (SERS), Member Benefits Guide, the file Ohio SERS served on 2026-10-21; the guide prints “Revised 1/2026”. It describes SERS, the school employees system. Teachers (STRS) and other public employees (OPERS) belong to different Ohio systems, and Ohio law and your own member account control over this summary.

Common mistakes

  • Starting a covered job right after the retirement date. The guide says you “will forfeit your pension for that period of time.”
  • Expecting to earn more pension. The guide says reemployed retirees have “no membership benefits available”.
  • Assuming health coverage carries on unchanged. The guide says you “temporarily may lose eligibility” while reemployed.
