Updated October 16, 2026. Quick answer: Form 1040 is the U.S. Individual Income Tax Return. The 2025 instructions say to file it by April 15, 2026, and that a Form 4868 extension gives an automatic 6 months to file but not to pay. The retirement and investment decisions show up on lines 4a to 7a, which feed total income, then the standard deduction, then the schedules that add tax or credits. A return is not valid unless it is signed as the instructions require.

What Form 1040 is, the due date and the extension
The form is titled “U.S. Individual Income Tax Return”. The instructions name the version to use: “For 2025, you will use Form 1040 or, if you were born before January 2, 1961, you have the option to use Form 1040-SR.” The senior version is covered on the Form 1040-SR page.
The deadline is stated plainly: “File Form 1040 or 1040-SR by April 15, 2026.” “If you file after this date, you may have to pay interest and penalties.”
For more time, “You can get an automatic 6-month extension if, no later than the date your return is due, you file Form 4868.” The extension has a limit: “An automatic 6-month extension to file doesn’t extend the time to pay your tax.” “If you don’t pay your tax by the original due date of your return, you will owe interest on the unpaid tax and may owe penalties.” Payments toward the next year are covered on the Form 1040-ES page.
Many returns need no extra schedule. The instructions say you may only need Form 1040 or 1040-SR and “none of the numbered schedules, Schedules 1 through 3.” A return with additional taxes also uses the Schedule 2 described on the Schedule 2 page.
Income lines where retirement and investment decisions show up
Lines 4a through 7a are the lines that move with withdrawals, pension income, benefits and sales. The instructions describe each one.
| Form 1040 line | What the instructions say |
|---|---|
| 4a and 4b, IRA distributions | “If the distribution from your IRA is fully taxable, enter the total distribution on line 4b; don’t make an entry on line 4a.” |
| 5a and 5b, Pensions and annuities | “Pension and annuity payments include distributions from 401(k), 403(b), and governmental 457(b) plans.” |
| 6a and 6b, Social security benefits | “You should receive a Form SSA-1099 showing in box 3 the total social security benefits paid to you.” |
| 7a, Capital gain or (loss) | “If you sold a capital asset, such as a stock, bond, or digital asset, you must complete and attach Form 8949 and Schedule D.” |
Line 4 has several exceptions. For a rollover, “Generally, a rollover must be made within 60 days after the day you received the distribution.” One case is “You received a distribution from an IRA (other than a Roth IRA) and you made nondeductible contributions to any of your traditional IRAs for 2025 or an earlier year.” In that case, “enter the total distribution on line 4a and see Form 8606 and its instructions to figure the amount to enter on line 4b.” Basis tracking is explained on the Form 8606 page.
For a qualified charitable distribution, “If the total amount distributed is a QCD, enter -0- on line 4b.” “Generally, your total QCDs for the year can’t be more than $108,000.”
For pensions, a fully taxable payment is entered differently from a partly taxable one: “If your pension or annuity is fully taxable, enter the total pension or annuity payments (from Form(s) 1099-R, box 1) on line 5b; don’t make an entry on line 5a.” When the payment is partly taxable, “Enter the total pension or annuity payments (from Form 1099-R, box 1) on line 5a.”
Social Security benefits and the worksheet
The instructions send the taxable amount to a worksheet: “Use the Social Security Benefits Worksheet in these instructions to see if any of your benefits are taxable.” The first two steps start from the form the Social Security Administration sends.
| Step | Wording and arithmetic |
|---|---|
| Worksheet line 1 | “Enter the total amount from box 5 of all your Forms SSA-1099 and RRB-1099.” |
| Worksheet line 2 | “Multiply line 1 by 50% (0.50)” |
| Illustration, not an IRS example | If the box 5 total were $24,000, line 2 would be $24,000 times 50%, which is $12,000. |
The instructions also list cases where this worksheet is not used. One is “You made contributions to a traditional IRA for 2025 and you or your spouse were covered by a retirement plan at work or through self-employment.” The taxable-benefit estimate is built in the Social Security taxability calculator.
Capital gain on line 7a and the schedules behind it
A sale goes through Form 8949 and Schedule D. The instructions allow a shortcut only in narrow cases: “You don’t have to file Form 8949 or Schedule D if you aren’t deferring any capital gain by investing in a qualified opportunity fund and both of the following apply.” The loss limit and carryover are on the Schedule D page.

From total income to tax: Schedules 1, 2 and 3
The face of the form carries the amounts down, and each schedule feeds one line.
| Line | Wording on the form |
|---|---|
| Line 9 | “Add lines 1z, 2b, 3b, 4b, 5b, 6b, 7a, and 8. This is your total income” |
| Line 11a | “Subtract line 10 from line 9. This is your adjusted gross income” |
| Line 15 | “Subtract line 14 from line 11b. If zero or less, enter -0-. This is your taxable income” |
| Line 17 | “Amount from Schedule 2, line 3” |
| Line 20 | “Amount from Schedule 3, line 8” |
| Line 23 | “Other taxes, including self-employment tax, from Schedule 2, line 21” |
| Line 24 | “Add lines 22 and 23. This is your total tax” |
Schedule 1 has two parts. “Additional income is entered on Schedule 1, Part I.” “Adjustments to income are entered on Schedule 1, Part II.” The retirement adjustment sits there: “If you made contributions to a traditional IRA for 2025, you may be able to take an IRA deduction.”
Schedule 3 carries credits. “Include the amount on Schedule 3, line 8, in the amount entered on Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR, line 20.” The retirement saver credit is one of them: “Retirement Savings Contributions Credit (Saver’s Credit)”.
Schedule 2 carries additional taxes. “Use Schedule 2 if you have additional taxes that can’t be entered directly on Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR.” The retirement account lines of that schedule are walked through on its own page.
The standard deduction and taxable income
The instructions open with a rule of thumb: “In most cases, your federal income tax will be less if you take the larger of your standard deduction or itemized deductions.” Itemizing is done on Schedule A. The form prints the standard deduction amounts beside line 12e:
| Filing status | Amount printed beside line 12e |
|---|---|
| Single or Married filing separately | “Single or Married filing separately, $15,750” |
| Married filing jointly or Qualifying surviving spouse | “Married filing jointly or Qualifying surviving spouse, $31,500” |
| Head of household | “Head of household, $23,625” |
Exceptions change the figure. “If you checked the box on line 12b, your standard deduction is zero, even if you were born before January 2, 1961, or were blind.” The year-by-year amounts and the extra amount for age and blindness are compared on the 2025 standard deduction page.

Signing is a validity rule, not a formality: “Form 1040 or 1040-SR isn’t considered a valid return unless you sign it in accordance with the requirements in these instructions.” “If you are filing a joint return, your spouse must also sign.”
The paper and electronic rules differ. “You must handwrite your signature on your return if you file it on paper.” “To file your return electronically, you must sign the return electronically using a personal identification number (PIN) and provide the information described below.”

Which revision applies
The edition read for this page is Form 1040 for 2025 and the 2025 Instructions for Form 1040 and Form 1040-SR, which are the revisions irs.gov served when they were read on 2026-10-16. They cover the 2025 return filed in 2026. A later year can change the line layout, the standard deduction amounts and the due date, so check the revision printed on the form you are filing.
Common mistakes
- Entering a fully taxable IRA or pension amount on the wrong line. The instructions say a fully taxable IRA distribution goes on line 4b with no entry on line 4a, and a fully taxable pension goes on line 5b with no entry on line 5a.
- Assuming an extension also moves the payment date. The instructions say the automatic 6-month extension to file does not extend the time to pay, and interest runs on unpaid tax from the original due date.
- Sending a return that is not signed correctly. The instructions say the return is not valid unless signed as required, a joint return needs both signatures, and a paper return needs a handwritten signature.
