W-2 Box 8: Allocated Tips (2025)

Updated October 17, 2026. Quick answer: Box 8 of Form W-2 shows tips your employer allocated to you. The Instructions for Employee say the amount is not included in box 1, 3, 5, or 7, so it is not part of your reported wages. They also say you must file Form 4137 with your return to report at least the allocated tip amount unless you can prove a smaller amount with adequate records.

More IRS forms and schedules for individual filers, read line by line: Form 4137 instructions.

Schedule 2 (Form 1040) for 2025, read line by line: Schedule 2 lines 5 to 7 and Schedule 2 lines 13 to 16.

What box 8 reports

The employer instructions say: “If you operate a large food or beverage establishment, show the tips allocated to the employee.” Read from the employee side, an amount in box 8 means the employer, a large food or beverage business, allocated tips to you under its own annual tip return. The instructions point the employer to the “Instructions for Form 8027, Employer’s Annual Information Return of Tip Income and Allocated Tips” for how the allocation is made.

This page is the box 8 explainer, and the full set of boxes 1 to 8 is in the W-2 boxes 1 to 8 guide.

If box 8 is blank on your form, nothing here applies to you. If it shows an amount, treat the number as a prompt to look at your own tip records before you file, because the sections below turn on what those records show. The reported-tips box is described on the box 7 page.

Not in boxes 1, 3, 5 or 7

The key rule is what box 8 is not part of. The employer instructions say “Do not include this amount in box 1, 3, 5, or 7.” The Instructions for Employee say it again from the employee side: “This amount is not included in box 1, 3, 5, or 7.” That means the wages in box 1 do not yet include these tips, and the social security and Medicare wages in boxes 3 and 5, and the reported tips in box 7, do not include them either.

The wage boxes explain the same exclusion. Box 3 is “not including social security tips and allocated tips”. The box 1 side is described on the box 1 page, the box 3 side on the box 3 page, the box 5 side on the box 5 page, and reported tips are on the box 7 page.

What the Instructions for Employee tell you to do

The employee copy sends you to the Form 1040 instructions for general tip reporting: “For information on how to report tips on your tax return, see the Form 1040 instructions.” It then gives the Form 4137 rule: “You must file Form 4137 with your income tax return to report at least the allocated tip amount unless you can prove with adequate records that you received a smaller amount.”

It also covers the case where your own records show a different figure: “If you have records that show the actual amount of tips you received, report that amount even if it is more or less than the allocated tips.” The reason to keep a daily tip record is therefore built into the form itself.

Form 4137, tax on tips, and your Social Security record

The Instructions for Employee explain what Form 4137 is for: “Use Form 4137 to figure the social security and Medicare tax owed on tips you didn’t report to your employer.” They add a benefit to filing: “By filing Form 4137, your social security tips will be credited to your social security record (used to figure your benefits).”

Form 4137 itself is a separate IRS form with its own instructions, and this page does not repeat them. A box 8 amount can also affect how you read the tax boxes. Box 4 is described on the box 4 page and box 6 on the box 6 page. Tips from payer forms are covered on the 1099-NEC cash tips page.

Edition and box numbers

The primary read for this page is the 2025 edition of Form W-2, the Wage and Tax Statement an employee receives in early 2026 for tax year 2025. That includes the Notice to Employee and the Instructions for Employee printed on the copies, together with the 2025 General Instructions for Forms W-2 and W-3. The form itself is headed “Wage and Tax Statement 2025”. The 2026 edition was the one irs.gov served as current on 2026-10-17, and it was read side by side for comparison. Box 8 reads the same in both editions. The 2026 employer instructions say “Do not include this amount in box 1, 3, 5, or 7.” and the 2026 form’s Instructions for Employee say “This amount is not included in box 1, 3, 5, or 7.” The Form 4137 sentence also matches: “You must file Form 4137 with your income tax return to report at least the allocated tip amount unless you can prove with adequate records that you received a smaller amount.” Check the tax year printed on the form you received, because the box numbers on this page are the ones on the 2025 and 2026 forms and your copy may be a different year.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming box 8 is already inside your wages. The form says “This amount is not included in box 1, 3, 5, or 7.”
  • Skipping Form 4137. The form says “You must file Form 4137 with your income tax return” unless you can prove a smaller amount.
  • Reporting the allocated figure when your records show something else. The form says “report that amount even if it is more or less than the allocated tips”.
