IRS Tax Topic 159: Wage and Income Transcript or W-2 Copy

Updated October 24, 2026. Quick answer: Tax Topic 159 separates a transcript from a copy. A wage and income transcript lists the data reported on forms like the W-2, while an actual copy of a W-2 from the IRS means ordering the whole return. The Social Security Administration is a second source for wage information.

Quick reference

ItemWhat the IRS topic says
Wage and income transcript“It shows the data reported to us on information returns such as Forms W-2, Form 1099 series, Form 1098 series, and Form 5498 series”
How far back transcripts go“These transcripts are available for the past ten tax years”
Actual copy of a W-2 from the IRS“The only way to get an actual copy of your Form W-2 from us is to order a copy of the entire return by using Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return and paying a $30 fee for each return requested.”
How long return copies exist“Copies of Forms 1040, 1040-A, and 1040-EZ are generally available for 7 years from filing before they are destroyed by law.”
Fee at the SSA for an unrelated reason“But there is a $62 fee per request if you need them for an unrelated reason.”

Transcript: the data, not the paper

The first part of the topic is headed Transcript. It says “You can use your online account for individuals to request your wage and income transcript.”

On what the transcript contains, the topic says “It shows the data reported to us on information returns such as Forms W-2, Form 1099 series, Form 1098 series, and Form 5498 series”. It adds a limit: “however, state or local information isn’t included with the Form W-2 information.”

On timing, the topic says “information for the currently-processing tax year may not be complete until the earnings are reported.”

The topic also names a paper route: “You can also use Form 4506-T, Request for Transcript of Tax Return to request a wage and income transcript.” On this site, Form 4506-T is covered on its own page.

Copy: what the IRS keeps

The second part is headed Copy. It starts with “We only retain actual copies of Form W-2, Wage and Tax Statement when attached to your paper tax return.”

That leads to the ordering rule, which the topic states this way: “The only way to get an actual copy of your Form W-2 from us is to order a copy of the entire return by using Form 4506, Request for Copy of Tax Return and paying a $30 fee for each return requested.”

On how long copies last, it says “Copies of Forms 1040, 1040-A, and 1040-EZ are generally available for 7 years from filing before they are destroyed by law.”

On disaster areas, the topic says “We will waive the fee for taxpayers impacted by a federally declared disaster.” It then gives the instruction “Include the Disaster Designation (for example, Hurricane Debby) at the top of the Form 4506.”

Getting a W-2 through the SSA

The third paragraph turns to the Social Security Administration. It says “The Social Security Administration (SSA) can provide a microprint copy of Form W-2 to the Number Holder (NH) or legal representative(s).”

On cost, it says “This copy is free of charge so long as it is used to help resolve an SSA program-related matter” and then “But there is a $62 fee per request if you need them for an unrelated reason.”

For contact details, the topic says “Visit SSA.gov or call 800-772-1213 for instructions on how to obtain wage information from the SSA.”

To see how a W-2 reads once you have it, start with W-2 box 1 and W-2 box 2.

Common mistakes

  • Expecting the IRS to mail a photocopy of just the W-2. The topic says “The only way to get an actual copy of your Form W-2 from us is to order a copy of the entire return”
  • Treating a transcript as the form itself. The topic describes it as “the data reported to us on information returns”
  • Expecting state wages on the transcript. The topic says “state or local information isn’t included with the Form W-2 information.”
  • Assuming the current year is complete. The topic says “information for the currently-processing tax year may not be complete until the earnings are reported.”
  • Assuming the SSA copy is always free. The topic says “But there is a $62 fee per request if you need them for an unrelated reason.”
