Schedule J (Form 1041) Part I Lines 1 to 5 (2025)

Updated October 18, 2026. Quick answer: Part I of Schedule J (Form 1041) finds the accumulation distribution for the current year. Lines 1 to 3 copy three figures from Schedule B of the trust’s Form 1041 (lines 10, 7 and 9), line 4 is a subtraction, and line 5 is the accumulation distribution. The source is the trust’s own Schedule B for the same year.

What Part I asks for

The form titles this part “Accumulation Distribution in 2025”. It is the first part of Schedule J (Form 1041), which explains who uses the schedule. Line 1 is captioned “Other amounts paid, credited, or otherwise required to be distributed for 2025”. Line 2 is “Distributable net income for 2025”. Line 3 is “Income required to be distributed currently for 2025”.

What to enter and where it comes from

Line 1: “Enter the amount from Form 1041, Schedule B, line 10, for 2025.” The instructions add “This is the amount properly paid, credited, or required to be distributed other than the amount of income for the current tax year required to be distributed currently.”

Line 2: “Enter the amount from Form 1041, Schedule B, line 7, for 2025.” “This is the amount of DNI for the current tax year determined under section 643(a).”

Line 3: “Enter the amount from Form 1041, Schedule B, line 9, for 2025.” “This is the amount of income for the current tax year required to be distributed currently.” Those Schedule B lines are explained on the Schedule B lines 1 to 8 and Schedule B lines 9 to 15 pages.

Lines 4 and 5: the subtraction and the result

Line 4 is captioned “Subtract line 3 from line 2.” and the form adds “If zero or less, enter-0-”. Line 5 is captioned “Accumulation distribution for 2025. Subtract line 4 from line 1”.

The instructions say when the rest of the schedule is needed: “If line 11 of Form 1041, Schedule B, is more than line 8 of Form 1041, Schedule B, complete the rest of Schedule J and file it with Form 1041, unless the trust has no previously accumulated income.”

The age 21 note on line 5

“Generally, amounts accumulated before a beneficiary reaches age 21 may be excluded by the beneficiary.” “The trustee reports to the IRS the total amount of the accumulation distribution before any reduction for income accumulated before the beneficiary reaches age 21.” On who claims the exclusion: “the beneficiary claims the exclusion when filing Form 4970”. The form’s own note sends you to the Form 4970 instructions: “See the Form 4970 instructions for certain income that minors may exclude and special rules for multiple trusts.”

For payments between trusts, the instructions point to a regulation: “For examples of accumulation distributions that include payments from one trust to another trust”, and amounts for a dependent’s support, see the regulation they cite.

Where it goes next

Line 5 is the amount allocated to throwback years on line 13, which is the subject of Parts II and III. The trust’s income tax return itself is described on the Form 1041 for estates page.

Edition and line numbers

This page reads Schedule J (Form 1041) for 2025 and the Instructions for Form 1041 for 2025. Those are the current files irs.gov served on 2026-10-18. The form is captioned “Part I Accumulation Distribution in 2025” and each page of the instructions carries the footer “Instructions for Form 1041 (2025)”. Check the revision date printed on your own Schedule J and use that revision’s line numbers, because a different revision can number or word its lines differently.

Common mistakes

  • Pulling lines 1 to 3 from the wrong year or the wrong line. The instructions send line 1 to “Form 1041, Schedule B, line 10, for 2025.”
  • Subtracting the age 21 amount before reporting the total. The instructions say “The trustee reports to the IRS the total amount of the accumulation distribution before any reduction for income accumulated before the beneficiary reaches age 21.”
  • Filing the whole schedule when the trust has nothing previously accumulated. The instructions say to complete the rest of Schedule J “unless the trust has no previously accumulated income.”
