New York Form IT-201 Lines 77 to 79: Refund Options (2025)

Updated October 24, 2026. Quick answer: Lines 77 to 79 of the New York Form IT-201 are where a 2025 overpayment turns into a refund, a deposit into a NYS 529 account, or a credit toward 2026 estimated tax. The booklet lets you pick one choice or split the amount between them. Direct deposit uses the account information on line 83.

What this line does

On page 4 of the form, line 77 is labelled “Amount overpaid (if line 76 is more than line 62, subtract line 62 from line 76)”. Line 78 reads “Amount of line 77 available for refund (subtract line 79 from line 77)”, and the form adds a tip under it: “TIP: Use this amount to check your refund status online.”

Line 78b is labelled “Total refund after NYS 529 account deposit (subtract line 78a from line 78)” and the form asks you to “Mark one refund choice:”. Line 79 reads “Amount of line 77 that you want applied to your 2026 estimated tax (see instructions)”. The full run of lines is on New York Form IT-201 line by line.

Who it applies to

The booklet does not set an age or income test for these lines. Line 77 itself opens with this: “You may choose to have your net overpayment:” Line 78b adds one condition of its own: “You must file a return to request a refund.”

For a retiree whose payments came mainly from withholding, the payment lines before this block are on New York Form IT-201 lines 72 to 74, and the matching federal refund lines are on Form 1040 lines 34, 35 and 36.

Where the result goes next

A refund by direct deposit goes to the account you enter on line 83: “If you choose direct deposit, enter your personal or business account information on line 83”. That line has its own page, New York Form IT-201 line 83. Money you apply on line 79 is described by the booklet as “applied to your 2026 estimated tax (enter on line 79);”.

Estimated payments toward the next year are covered on Form 1040 line 26. The booklet text for the line before this block, line 75, is on New York Form IT-201 line 75.

Common mistakes

  • Entering a refund amount that ignores the 2026 estimated tax choice. The booklet says “Subtract the amount on line 79 (estimated tax) from line 77.”
  • Splitting the overpayment so the pieces do not add up. The booklet says “The total of lines 78a through 79 should equal the amount on line 77.”
  • Leaving the refund choice blank. The booklet says “Mark an X in one box to indicate your choice.”
