New York Form IT-201 Line 41: Resident Credit (2025 Return)

Updated October 24, 2026. Quick answer: Line 41 of the New York Form IT-201 is the resident credit. It starts with a yes or no question about income from outside New York State and tax paid elsewhere. A yes answer sends you to Form IT-112-R, and the total goes on line 41 and into line 43.

What this line does

The form labels the line “Resident credit”, on page 3 of the IT-201, in the block that runs from the state tax on line 39 down to the net tax on line 44. The booklet’s heading is “Line 41: Resident credit”. See New York Form IT-201 line by line for the other lines around it.

Who it applies to

The booklet opens with a single question: “Did you have income from sources outside New York State and pay income tax to another state, a local government of another state, the District of Columbia, or to a province of Canada?” A no answer means “If No, go to line 42.”

  • Entering a partial figure when both forms apply. The booklet says “Enter the total amount of resident credit on line 41”
  • Leaving the forms out of the envelope. The booklet says to “submit either form or both forms with your return.”
