Updated September 30, 2026. Quick answer: Medigap Plan G covers nearly every benefit on Medicare’s standard chart in full. The exceptions are the Part B deductible, which it does not cover and which is $283 in 2026, and foreign travel emergency care, which it covers at 80%. The plan does cover Part B coinsurance and Part B excess charges. People new to Medicare on or after January 1, 2020 can buy Plan G but not Plan C or F. The monthly premium is set by each insurance company and is not a federal figure, so none is printed here.

What Plan G covers in 2026
This is the Plan G column of the benefits chart in the Medicare.gov guide Choosing a Medigap Policy (March 2026). The guide’s key says the plan covers 100% of a benefit where the chart shows a check mark, and the percentage shown where it shows one.
| Benefit | Plan G |
|---|---|
| Part A coinsurance and hospital costs (up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are used) | Covers 100% |
| Part B coinsurance or copayment | Covers 100% |
| Blood benefit (first 3 pints) | Covers 100% |
| Part A hospice care coinsurance or copayment | Covers 100% |
| Skilled nursing facility care coinsurance | Covers 100% |
| Part A deductible | Covers 100% |
| Part B deductible | Does not cover |
| Part B excess charge | Covers 100% |
| Foreign travel emergency (up to plan limits) | Covers 80% |
The cost Plan G leaves: the Part B deductible
CMS puts the 2026 figure this way: “The annual deductible for all Medicare Part B beneficiaries will be $283 in 2026, an increase of $26 from the annual deductible of $257 in 2025.” Plan G pays Part B coinsurance but not that deductible, so the first $283 of Part B services each year comes out of your pocket. After it, Plan G picks up the Part B coinsurance.
One figure in the Medicare.gov guide needs care. Its note for Plans K and L calls $202.90 the 2026 Part B deductible. CMS says $202.90 is the 2026 standard monthly Part B premium: “The standard monthly premium for Medicare Part B enrollees will be $202.90 for 2026, an increase of $17.90 from $185.00 in 2025.” This page uses the CMS figures, $283 for the deductible and $202.90 for the premium.
Who can buy Plan G
The guide explains who can buy it: “While people new to Medicare on or after January 1, 2020 can’t buy Plans C and F, they have the right to buy Plans D and G instead, which give the same benefits but don’t cover the Part B deductible.” Your right to buy at any time depends on your enrollment window; see the Medigap underwriting window page.
The high-deductible version
Some insurers also sell Plan G with a high deductible. The guide says: “you must pay the first $2,950 (in 2026) of deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance for covered services not paid by Medicare before the Medigap policy pays anything.” Whether that trade-off pays off is worked through at the high-deductible Plan G page.
What Plan G costs and what no Medigap plan covers
The monthly price depends on the insurer. The guide says: “Although this guide can’t give actual costs of Medigap policies, you can get this information by calling insurance companies or your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP).” The premium is paid “in addition to the monthly Part B premium you pay to Medicare.”
The guide lists what Medigap policies generally do not cover: long-term care, vision or dental care, hearing aids, glasses and private-duty nursing. A Medigap policy covers one person, so a couple needs two policies.
Edition and scope
Sources: the benefit chart and the $2,950 high-deductible figure come from the March 2026 Medicare.gov guide, which says it shows 2026 benefits. The Part B deductible and premium come from the CMS fact sheet released November 14, 2025. Neither source gives Plan G premiums, so this page does not.
Common mistakes
- Assuming Plan G covers the Part B deductible. It does not; that is the $283 you still pay.
- Comparing Plan G premiums across companies for a different lettered plan. Compare the same letter.
- Treating $202.90 as the deductible. It is the 2026 standard monthly Part B premium.
