Updated August 10, 2026. Quick answer. Georgia life insurance policies carry a free-look period of 10 days, and a grace period of Not less than 30 days before a missed premium lapses the policy. If the insurer fails, Georgia Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association is the backstop, subject to statutory caps below.

The free-look period

10 days

The clock runs from: receipt of the policy or contract – but Georgia defines constructive receipt by statute.

The grace period before a lapse

Not less than 30 days

Runs from: the due date of any premium after the first.

Coverage during the grace period: The policy continues in force; if a claim arises during the grace period, the amount of any premium due or overdue may be deducted from any amount payable under the policy in settlement

If the insurer fails: the guaranty association limits

Georgia Life and Health Insurance Guaranty Association is Georgia’s backstop if a life insurer becomes insolvent — but it pays up to a statutory cap, not the full policy value.

BenefitLimit
Death benefit$300,000
Cash surrender value$100,000

Read the cap as a coinsurance percentage AND a dollar ceiling, whichever binds first — many states apply both (commonly 80% of the contractual value, capped at a flat dollar figure), so a large policy can lose more than the percentage alone suggests.
