Updated September 29, 2026. Quick answer: Box 14a of Form 5498 reports the amount you repaid to an IRA after certain special distributions, and Box 14b holds a two-letter code for which kind: QR, DD, BA, HP, EP, TI or DA. HP is new for the 2026 form.
Box 14a, the repayment amount
The IRS instruction to the trustee reads: “Enter the amount of any repayment of a qualified reservist distribution, a qualified disaster distribution, a qualified birth or adoption distribution, a qualified first-time home purchase distribution, an emergency personal expense distribution, a terminally ill individual distribution, or an eligible distribution to a domestic abuse victim.” The instructions read here are the 2026 edition of the IRS Instructions for Forms 1099-R and 5498, which cover Form 5498 for 2026 and are written for the IRA trustee or issuer that files it.
Box 14b, the seven codes
The instruction is “Enter repayment code:” and the codes are below.
| Box 14b code | IRS wording for the distribution repaid |
|---|---|
| QR | “for qualified reservist distribution” |
| DD | “for qualified disaster distribution” |
| BA | “for qualified birth or adoption distribution” |
| HP | “for qualified first-time home purchase distribution” |
| EP | “for emergency personal expense distribution” |
| TI | “for terminally ill individual distribution” |
| DA | “for eligible distribution to a domestic abuse victim” |
HP is new for 2026
The IRS lists the change in the What’s New section: HP is “as the code to use for the repayment of a qualified first-time home purchase distribution”. A trustee using an older list will not have it.
Repayments made after 60 days
Box 2 is not used for these later repayments. The instructions say “Do not use box 2 for extended rollover contributions, including rollovers of qualified plan loan offset amounts after 60 days or any of the following repayments made after 60 days.” The seven distributions the note lists match the seven codes above. Postponed contributions and late rollovers are on the Box 13 page.
Common mistakes
- Reading a Box 14a amount as a new contribution for the year. It is a repayment of an earlier special distribution.
- Guessing a code from the letters. Each code stands for one named distribution type.
- Using an older code list. HP for qualified first-time home purchase distributions is new for the 2026 form.
