Form 4562 Part V Lines 24 to 41: Listed Property (2025)

Updated October 18, 2026. Quick answer: Part V is where cars, certain other vehicles, aircraft and entertainment property are reported. Section A (lines 24 to 29) holds the depreciation figures, Section B (lines 30 to 36) holds mileage and use questions for each vehicle, and Section C (lines 37 to 41) holds questions for employers who provide vehicles. Totals carry to lines 21 and 7.

What Part V asks for

The Part V heading reads “Listed Property (Include automobiles, certain other vehicles, certain aircraft, and property used for entertainment, recreation, or amusement.)” The instructions say who completes it: “If you claim the standard mileage rate, actual vehicle expenses (including depreciation), or depreciation on other listed property, you must provide the information requested in Part V, regardless of the tax year the property was placed in service.” Schedule C filers have a carve-out: “if you file Schedule C (Form 1040) and are claiming the standard mileage rate or actual vehicle expenses (except depreciation), and you are not required to file Form 4562 for any other reason, report vehicle information in Part IV of Schedule C and not on Form 4562.” That Schedule C part is covered at Schedule C Part IV.

Lines 24a to 24c and line 25

The captions are “Do you have evidence to support the business/investment use claimed?” and “Do you own, lease, or charter an aircraft?” For line 24c the instructions say “Indicate whether you owned, leased, or chartered an aircraft during the tax year. Check all boxes that apply.” Line 25 asks for “Special depreciation allowance for qualified listed property placed in service during the tax year and used more than 50% in a qualified business use.” and the instructions say “Enter on line 25 your total special depreciation allowance for all qualified listed property.”

Lines 26 and 27: the 50 percent split

The instructions say “Use line 26 to figure depreciation for property used more than 50% in a qualified business use. Use line 27 to figure the depreciation for property used 50% or less in a qualified business use.” On which uses count, “Generally, a qualified business use is any use in your trade or business.” “Your percentage of qualified business use may be smaller than the business/investment use percentage.” Section 179 is limited for the lower group: “Listed property used 50% or less in a qualified business use (as defined in the instructions for lines 26 and 27 below) does not qualify for the section 179 expense deduction or special depreciation allowance.”

The columns on lines 26 and 27

For column (c) the instructions say “For automobiles and other vehicles, determine this percentage by dividing the number of miles the vehicle is driven for trade or business purposes or for the production of income during the year (not to include any commuting mileage) by the total number of miles the vehicle is driven for all purposes.” For column (d) “Enter the property’s actual cost (including sales tax) or other basis (unadjusted for prior years’ depreciation).” For column (i) the instructions say “You cannot elect to expense more than $31,300 of the cost of any SUVs and certain other vehicles placed in service during the tax year.” Column (h) points to the limits for passenger automobiles, which are printed as tables in the instructions. This page does not copy those tables; use the table for the year and vehicle type. For column (a) the instruction is “If you have more than five vehicles used 100% for business/investment purposes, you may group them by tax year. Otherwise, list each vehicle separately.”

Lines 28 and 29, then Sections B and C

Line 28 reads “Add amounts in column (h), lines 25 through 27. Enter here and on line 21.” Line 29 reads “Add amounts in column (i), line 26. Enter here and on line 7.” Section B is for vehicles: “Except as noted below, you must complete lines 30 through 36 for each vehicle identified in Section A.” The exception is “Employers are not required to complete lines 30 through 36 for vehicles used by employees who are not more than 5% owners or related persons and for which the question on line 37, 38, 39, 40, or 41 is answered “Yes.”” Section C asks employers, in the form’s words, to “Answer these questions to determine if you meet an exception to completing Section B for vehicles used by employees who aren’t more than 5% owners or related persons.” Line 37, for example, asks about a written policy that prohibits personal use, and the instructions list conditions that policy must meet. Line 40 is explained as “An employer that provides more than five vehicles to its employees who are not 5% owners or related persons need not complete Section B for such vehicles.”

Where the number comes from

The figures come from your own vehicle logs and purchase records: mileage for business, commuting and personal use, the date placed in service, cost and business use percentage. The instructions say employees also supply data: “Employees must provide their employers with the information requested on lines 30 through 36 for each automobile or vehicle provided for their use.”

Where it goes next

Line 28 carries to line 21 and line 29 to line 7, as the captions above say. Those lines are at lines 21 to 23 and lines 6 to 13. If use later drops, the instructions say “If you used listed property more than 50% in a qualified business use in the year you placed the property in service, and used it 50% or less in a later year, you may have to include as income part of the depreciation, including the special depreciation allowance, deducted in prior years.” “Use Form 4797, Sales of Business Property, to figure the recapture amount.” See Form 4797 for that form.

Edition and line numbers

This page reads the 2025 Form 4562, Depreciation and Amortization, and its 2025 instructions, the current files irs.gov served on 2026-10-18. They are the files for the tax year 2025 return, filed in 2026. The form’s own header says “Attach to your tax return.” Check the tax year printed on the form you are filling in and use the line numbers on that year’s form, because a different year’s form can number or word its lines differently.

Common mistakes

  • Putting a vehicle in the wrong line group. The instructions say “Use line 26 to figure depreciation for property used more than 50% in a qualified business use.”
  • Expensing listed property that is used 50% or less for business. The instructions say “Listed property used 50% or less in a qualified business use (as defined in the instructions for lines 26 and 27 below) does not qualify for the section 179 expense deduction or special depreciation allowance.”
  • Skipping Section B for a vehicle. The instructions say “Except as noted below, you must complete lines 30 through 36 for each vehicle identified in Section A.”
