Form 1120-S Schedule K Lines 17 and 18 (2025)

Updated October 18, 2026. Quick answer: Schedule K line 17 is the Other Information group: investment income and expenses, dividends paid from accumulated earnings and profits, and an attachment line for other items. Line 18 reconciles the income and loss lines of Schedule K into one figure that must match the reconciliation schedules on page 5. The amounts come from the corporation’s own records and from the Schedule K lines the instructions name.

What these lines are

These are the last numbered lines of Schedule K on page 4 of the Form 1120-S return. The form places lines 17a to 17d under the heading “Other Information” and line 18 under “Reconciliation”. The earlier Schedule K lines are covered on the pages for Schedule K lines 1 to 4, Schedule K lines 5 to 10, Schedule K lines 11 to 13 and Schedule K lines 14 to 16.

Lines 17a and 17b: investment income and expenses

The form’s captions are “Investment income” for line 17a and “Investment expenses” for line 17b. The instructions say “Enter on line 17a the investment income included on Schedule K, lines 4, 5a, 6, and 10.” “Don’t include other portfolio gains or losses on this line.” For line 17b: “Enter on line 17b the investment expense included on Schedule K, line 12e.”

The instructions also define the terms: “Investment expenses are deductible expenses (other than interest) directly connected with the production of investment income.” They point to the Instructions for Form 4952, and the shareholder-side investment interest rules are on the Form 4952 page. Two limits are stated: “Property subject to a net lease isn’t treated as investment property because it is subject to the passive loss rules.” “Don’t reduce investment income by losses from passive activities.”

If other investment items are mixed into amounts passed through separately, “give each shareholder a statement identifying these amounts.”

Line 17c: dividend distributions paid from accumulated earnings and profits

The form’s caption is “Dividend distributions paid from accumulated earnings and profits”. The instructions say “Enter total dividends paid to shareholders from accumulated earnings and profits.” “Report these dividends to shareholders on Form 1099-DIV.” “Don’t report them on Schedule K-1.” The instructions for line 16d, covered on the Schedule K lines 14 to 16 page, connect back to this line by excluding “dividends reported on Schedule K, line 17c” from the distributions entered there.

Line 17d: other items and amounts

Line 17d carries the caption “Other items and amounts (attach statement)”. The instructions say “Report the following information on a statement attached to Form 1120-S.” “On Schedule K-1, enter the appropriate code in box 17 for each information item”. The instructions then list the information categories with their codes, and the codes are the same box 17 codes covered for the shareholder’s side on the Schedule K-1 box 17 other codes page.

Line 18: income (loss) reconciliation

Line 18 is a computation line. The form’s caption reads “Income (loss) reconciliation. Combine the total amounts on lines 1 through 10.” “From the result, subtract the sum of the amounts on lines 11 through 12e and 16f”. The instructions add: “subtract that amount for purposes of figuring the corporation’s net income (loss).” That sentence applies to the amount on line 16f, foreign taxes paid or accrued.

The instructions then state the tie-out: “The amount reported on line 18 must be the same as the amount reported on Schedule M-1, line 8, or Schedule M-3 (Form 1120-S), Part II, line 26, column (d).” The Schedule M-1 side of that match is on the Schedule M-1 page.

Where the number comes from

Lines 17a and 17b are drawn from the Schedule K lines the instructions name (lines 4, 5a, 6, 10 and 12e). Line 17c comes from the corporation’s records of dividends paid to shareholders. Line 17d is an attached statement. Line 18 is not an independent figure: it is the result of combining and subtracting other Schedule K lines, and it has to agree with the reconciliation schedule the corporation completes. The page 1 result that feeds line 1 of Schedule K is covered on the page 1 lines 13 to 22 page.

Where it goes next

Line 17 amounts reach the shareholders as follows: “Report each shareholder’s pro rata share of amounts reported on lines 17a and 17b (investment income and expenses) in box 17 of Schedule K-1 using codes A and B, respectively.” Line 17c is the exception, because the instructions say not to report it on Schedule K-1. Line 18 feeds the reconciliation: see the Schedule M-1 page, and the Schedule L page for the balance sheet on the same form page.

Edition and line numbers

This page reads the 2025 Form 1120-S and its 2025 instructions, the current files irs.gov served on 2026-10-18. They are the files for the tax year 2025 return, filed in 2026. Form 1120-S prints the title line “U.S. Income Tax Return for an S Corporation”, with the header “For calendar year 2025 or tax year beginning”. Check the tax year printed on the form you are filling in and use the line numbers on that year’s form, because a different year’s form can number or word its lines differently.

Common mistakes

  • Putting other portfolio gains or losses on line 17a. The instructions say “Don’t include other portfolio gains or losses on this line.”
  • Reporting line 17c dividends on the shareholders’ Schedules K-1. The instructions say “Don’t report them on Schedule K-1.”
  • Leaving line 18 out of step with the reconciliation schedule. The instructions say “The amount reported on line 18 must be the same as the amount reported on Schedule M-1, line 8”
