Updated October 17, 2026. Quick answer: Form 1099-DA is the statement a broker sends when you sell, exchange or otherwise dispose of a digital asset. The recipient copy says: “If you received a Form 1099-DA, you generally sold, exchanged, or otherwise disposed of a financial interest in a digital asset”. Find the box you are reading in the table below.
Schedule 1 (Form 1040) for 2025, read line by line: Schedule 1 lines 8t to 8z.

What the form is
The recipient copy opens with the broker’s duty: “Brokers must report proceeds from (and in some cases, basis for) digital asset dispositions to you and the IRS on Form 1099-DA.” It adds: “You may be required to recognize gain from these dispositions of digital assets.”
Edition this guide follows
These pages read the 2025 edition of Form 1099-DA and its Instructions for Recipient, the form received in early 2026 for tax year 2025, together with the 2025 Instructions for Form 1099-DA. The 2026 editions were the ones irs.gov served as current on 2026-10-17 and were read for comparison; differences are noted on the box pages. Check the tax year printed on the form you received.
What is not covered here
Boxes 3a, 3b, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12a and 12b have no page of their own here. For a swap of one digital asset for another, see the crypto swap page.
Common mistakes
- Assuming a blank cost box means zero. The form says “If box 1g has any entry, including zero, the information within that box has been reported to the IRS as basis.”.
- Treating proceeds as cash only. The form says total proceeds “may include cash, the value of services, digital assets, or other property”.
- Skipping the question on Form 1040. The form says you “should check the “Yes” box next to the question on page 1 of Form 1040”.
