What “suitability” vs. “fiduciary” means

  • Suitability (broker/dealer standard): recommendation must be “suitable,” but can still pay the firm more. Conflicts may exist.
  • Fiduciary (RIA standard): adviser must put your interests first, avoid/mitigate conflicts, and disclose them in writing (e.g., Form ADV).
