Updated October 4, 2026. Quick answer: Yes. New Jersey taxes net gains from stocks, funds and real estate as gross income at its regular graduated rates, reported on Schedule NJ-DOP. The instructions say “Capital gain is calculated the same way as for federal purposes”. The 2025 rates run from 1.4% to 10.75%.

How New Jersey treats capital gains
| Item | What the documents say |
|---|---|
| Treatment | Taxed at the regular graduated rates; no lower rate for long-term gains is printed |
| Where reported | Schedule NJ-DOP, then the New Jersey return |
| 2025 rates (single filers) | From 1.4% (printed as .014) to 10.75% (printed as .1075), with the multipliers .0175, .035, .05525, .0637 and .0897 between; the .1075 rate applies above $1,000,000 |
| Losses | “You cannot carry back or carry forward such losses” |
A $50,000 long-term gain
A $50,000 gain taxed wholly at the lowest 2025 rate, 1.4%, would add $700; wholly at the top rate, 10.75%, $5,375. Your own figure depends on the bracket your total income puts the gain in.

Federal rules
The state’s treatment sits on top of the federal one. The IRS explains the federal tax on gains in Topic no. 409, Capital Gains and Losses and Publication 550, Investment Income and Expenses.
