What this guide covers
A quick view of the questions and evidence developed below.
Updated July 31, 2026. Quick answer: what you give matters more than how much. Cash to a public charity gets the highest AGI limit; appreciated stock gets a lower limit but avoids the capital gain entirely, which is usually the better trade; and the same appreciated property given to a private foundation may only be deductible at your basis. On top of that sit two 2026 changes that reduce the value of large gifts for high earners – a floor below which giving produces no deduction at all, and a cap on the rate at which deductions count. Separately, if you are over 70 and a half, a qualified charitable distribution from an IRA is often worth more than a deduction, because it never enters your income in the first place.
