California Form 540 Line 7: Personal Exemptions (2025 Return)

Updated October 24, 2026. Quick answer: Line 7 of the California Form 540 is the personal exemption line, and it sits right below the line 6 box that asks whether someone else can claim you as a dependent. If the line 6 box is not checked, the filing status prompt printed on line 7 applies. If it is checked, the booklet gives a different set of enter rules. The result feeds the exemption amount on line 11.

What this line does

On Form 540 the exemptions block opens with line 6, whose label is “If someone can claim you (or your spouse/RDP) as a dependent, check the box here.” Line 7 follows. The form words it this way: “Personal: If you checked box 1, 3, or 4 above, enter 1 in the box. If you checked box 2 or 5, enter 2 in the box. If you checked the box on line 6, see instructions.”

The booklet’s instruction headings are Line 6 and Line 7 under the family title “Exemptions”. The form itself prints line 6 through line 9 on its first side; this page covers lines 6 and 7 only, and the full run of lines is on California Form 540 line by line.

Who it applies to

The booklet states the line 6 condition this way: “Check the box on line 6 if someone else can claim you or your spouse/RDP as a dependent on their tax return, even if they chose not to.”

For joint filers it adds: “If you are married or in an RDP and file a joint return, you can be claimed as a dependent on someone else’s return if you file the joint return only to claim a refund of withheld income tax or estimated tax paid.”

Line 7 itself then splits on one question: “Did you check the box on line 6?” The booklet also carries a warning on the personal exemption line: “Do not claim this credit if someone else can claim you as a dependent on their tax return.”

Where the result goes next

Line 7 is one of four exemption lines. The form’s line 11 reads “Exemption amount: Add line 7 through line 10. Transfer this amount to line 32”, and the booklet says to “Add line 7 through line 10 and enter the total dollar amount of all exemptions for personal, blind, senior, and dependent.” For the larger context of how California taxes retirement income, see California retirement taxes and whether California taxes pensions, and for the rate side see California tax brackets.

Common mistakes

  • Following the printed line 7 prompt after checking the line 6 box. The booklet says “Ignore the instructions on Form 540, line 7.” when the answer is yes.
  • Treating the line 6 box as optional when someone could claim you. The booklet’s test applies “even if they chose not to.”
  • Claiming the credit anyway. The booklet warns “Do not claim this credit if someone else can claim you as a dependent on their tax return.”
