Clear Money Guide
What this guide covers
A quick view of the questions and evidence developed below.
Updated August 3, 2026. Quick answer: the thing families provide that is hardest to replace is not money or labour — it is somebody noticing. Decline and fraud are usually caught by a person who sees the post piling up or the story not adding up. Without that, monitoring has to be built deliberately.
The cheapest layer, and it costs nothing
Name a trusted contact on every investment account. It gives away no authority at all — the person cannot trade, withdraw or direct anything — and it lets the firm call somebody if a withdrawal looks wrong. Under a separate rule the firm can pause a disbursement while it checks. The rule and its clock.
For someone without family this is the single highest-value item on the page, because it creates an outside observer where there was none.
Paid help that does the day-to-day
Per AADMM’s own site, daily money managers deliver essential personal financial services to seniors and older adults, people with disabilities, busy professionals, high net worth individuals, small businesses and others – including bill payment, payroll-related tasks and bookkeeping.
What the credential means and how to check one.
Where we could not verify what we wanted to
Care managers. We intended to describe aging-life-care professionals here — what their credentials mean, whether the role is licensed anywhere, and how an engagement typically works. The Aging Life Care Association’s website blocked every request we made, including its home page, so we verified nothing and are publishing nothing. The role is real and may be worth engaging; we simply cannot tell you what its credential means, and would rather say so than reconstruct it.
The layers that actually work
- An outside observer on the money — trusted contact, and a second set of eyes on statements.
- A scheduled human check-in that happens whether or not anything is wrong. The value is the regularity: an unusual silence is only informative against a pattern. Paid services exist for exactly this; Cozy Check-ins is one example, a daily text your parent answers with one tap so the family sees the pattern.
- A written operating manual — accounts, professionals, documents, medications. If nobody knows your affairs by instinct, the file has to.
- Named agents with named successors, so one person becoming unavailable does not collapse the arrangement. When there is no obvious person.
- A rule you set now about inbound contact — that nothing arriving unsolicited leads to a payment in the same session. The five features worth recognising. The same rule earns its keep at an in-home equipment appointment, where having your own rent or buy numbers before the visit is what makes a same-day price reasonable to decline.
Why fraud protection matters more here
Related: when the credentials check out but the person does not · when the risk is the person you appointed.
The protection you’re counting on may not cover a payment you were tricked into making.
The frauds that empty retirement accounts are built to make the victim act alone and in a hurry, and secrecy is the mechanism rather than a side effect. The main federal payment protection may not cover a payment you were deceived into authorising, which makes an observer beforehand worth far more than any remedy afterwards.
Before you start, what actually happens. The form is run by Kapitalwise, our advisor-matching partner. Kapitalwise sends your details to advisers who pay for the introduction, so expect calls and texts. Clear Money Guide is paid when you submit the form, whether or not you ever hire anyone. The matching service is free to you and there is no obligation to hire anyone.
The Kapitalwise form opens here. You stay on this page.
What happens when you press the button
It requests contact details and phone verification by text. Nothing loads and nothing reaches Kapitalwise until you press the button. Submitting the form does not guarantee an adviser or a match.
General information drawn from IRS, Medicare, HUD and state statute and regulation, not legal, tax or financial advice. Continuing-care law is state law and differs materially between states; every figure here is year-labelled and every source named. Fiduciary licensing, executor compensation and intestacy are STATE law and differ materially between states. Fee figures are quoted from published schedules on the dates stated and change without notice; nothing here is a substitute for advice on your own facts.
The Aging Life Care Association’s site has since served us, so the role we could not describe above is now written up, with the association’s own definition and two published fee schedules, on what a geriatric care manager costs.
