Private Bank Minimum Investment: What the Filings Say

Updated October 29, 2026. Quick answer: The one bank page we read that states a private-banking minimum is Citi Private Bank’s: “Our services have a minimum investment level of $5 million.” Elsewhere the numbers on file are program minimums in the Form ADV brochure of the SEC-registered adviser beside each bank: $10,000 at Morgan Stanley, J.P. Morgan and Wells Fargo, $25,000 at Citi (its advisory programs brochure) and UBS, $250,000 at Huntington, $500,000 typically at BMO’s Stoker Ostler, a net worth of $1 million at UMB, and no minimum at Citizens Private Wealth. Those are the minimums written in the brochures, not necessarily the size a private bank’s banker will work with, and the table names the legal entity behind each number.

What the filings of the banks’ advisers list

Where a bank’s investment advisory programs are run by a separately registered adviser, that adviser’s Form ADV brochure is where a minimum is written down. Each row names that adviser and its CRD number, and each figure is quoted from the brochure on the date shown.

What the banks print on their own pages

Citi Private Bank’s inquiry page answers a visitor who reports a net worth under $5 million with “Our services have a minimum investment level of $5 million.” and says its family office services are “only available to single family offices with over $100 million in AUM”.

U.S. Bank labels its tiers by net worth on its private wealth page: “Net worth $250,000 to $3 million” for Wealth Management, “Net worth $3 to $75 million” for Private Wealth Management, and “Net worth more than $75 million” for Ascent Private Capital Management. That is a band for who the service is for, not an account minimum.

We also read the J.P. Morgan Private Bank home page on October 29, 2026; the text we retrieved states no account minimum, so the J.P. Morgan figures above come from its adviser’s brochure. Goldman Sachs Private Wealth Management is not in the table because we did not read a brochure minimum for it.

How to use a brochure minimum

A program minimum is the least you can put into that program. It is not a promise that a banker will take you on at that size, and a manager chosen inside a program can set a higher one: J.P. Morgan’s brochure ties its minimums to the manager “subject to minimum account requirements imposed by the applicable Portfolio Manager” for its STRATIS strategies. Ask the banker for the written minimum of the specific program, then price it with the fee page for that firm.

The firm-by-firm pages show the fee at each minimum: J.P. Morgan, Citi, Morgan Stanley, Northern Trust, Wells Fargo, UBS, U.S. Bancorp Advisors, Huntington, Citizens Private Wealth, UMB, and BMO.

Common mistakes

  • Reading a $10,000 program minimum as the size a private banker will accept: the brochures do not say that.
  • Comparing a net-worth band (U.S. Bank) with an account minimum (the brochures) as if they were the same measure.
  • Treating the registered adviser’s number as the bank’s own: the legal entity in each row is a different company from the bank.
