Updated October 24, 2026. Quick answer: Line 41 of the New York Form IT-201 is the resident credit. It starts with a yes or no question about income from outside New York State and tax paid elsewhere. A yes answer sends you to Form IT-112-R, and the total goes on line 41 and into line 43.
What this line does
The form labels the line “Resident credit”, on page 3 of the IT-201, in the block that runs from the state tax on line 39 down to the net tax on line 44. The booklet’s heading is “Line 41: Resident credit”. See New York Form IT-201 line by line for the other lines around it.
Who it applies to
The booklet opens with a single question: “Did you have income from sources outside New York State and pay income tax to another state, a local government of another state, the District of Columbia, or to a province of Canada?” A no answer means “If No, go to line 42.”
What the instructions say
| Line | What the form says |
|---|---|
| Heading | “Line 41: Resident credit” |
| The question | “Did you have income from sources outside New York State and pay income tax to another state, a local government of another state, the District of Columbia, or to a province of Canada?” |
| Answer No | “If No, go to line 42.” |
| Answer Yes, the forms | “If Yes, complete Form IT-112-R, New York State Resident Credit, and, if applicable, Form IT-112-C, New York State Resident Credit for Taxes Paid to a Province of Canada.” |
| Answer Yes, the entry | “Enter the total amount of resident credit on line 41 and submit either form or both forms with your return.” |
| The form’s line 41 | “Resident credit” |
| The form’s line 43 | “Add lines 40, 41, and 42” |
| The form’s line 44 | “Subtract line 43 from line 39 (if line 43 is more than line 39, enter 0)” |
Where the result goes next
The total from the credit forms is entered on line 41. Line 43 of the form then reads “Add lines 40, 41, and 42”, and line 44 reads “Subtract line 43 from line 39 (if line 43 is more than line 39, enter 0)”. Common mistakes
- Answering Yes without the forms. The booklet says to “complete Form IT-112-R, New York State Resident Credit”
- Entering a partial figure when both forms apply. The booklet says “Enter the total amount of resident credit on line 41”
- Leaving the forms out of the envelope. The booklet says to “submit either form or both forms with your return.”
