Updated October 24, 2026. Quick answer: Line 34 of New York Form IT-201 is where you enter your New York standard deduction or your New York itemized deduction. The booklet says “You may take either the New York standard deduction or the New York itemized deduction.” It gives four steps for choosing, and the result is subtracted from line 33 on the next line of the form.
What this line does
The booklet’s instructions for this line are headed “Line 34: Standard or itemized deduction”, under the step headed “Step 5: Enter your New York standard or New York itemized deduction and dependent exemption amounts”. On the form, line 34 reads “Enter your standard deduction or your itemized deduction (from Form IT-196)”, followed by “Mark an X in the appropriate box”. It sits on page 2 of the form.
The booklet introduces the process with “To determine which deduction to use, follow these steps:” For the whole sequence of lines see New York Form IT-201 line by line.
Who it applies to
The booklet opens with the choice: “You may take either the New York standard deduction or the New York itemized deduction.” Two of its notes set conditions. One is about itemizing: “If you choose the itemized deduction, you must submit Form IT-196 with your return.” The other is about married people filing separate returns: “both of you must take the standard deduction unless both of you choose to itemize deductions on your New York returns.”
A third note is about tuition: “If you paid qualified college tuition expenses, you may choose to claim either a credit or an itemized deduction.” The footnote to that note says “The college tuition itemized deduction may offer you a greater tax benefit if you itemize deductions on your New York return.”
What the instructions say

The figures the form prints
Step 1 points to a table: “use the New York State standard deduction table below”. The table is headed with the words New York State standard deduction table, has one row for each filing status, and prints the amount to enter on line 34 beside each status. It appears here as the booklet prints it.
| Filing status | Standard deduction in dollars (enter on line 34) |
|---|---|
| Single and you marked item C Yes | 3,100 |
| Single and you marked item C No | 8,000 |
| Married filing joint return | 16,050 |
| Married filing separate return | 8,000 |
| Head of household (with qualifying person) | 11,200 |
| Qualifying surviving spouse | 16,050 |
Where the result goes next
The amount you enter on line 34 is subtracted on the next line. The form’s line 35 reads “Subtract line 34 from line 33 (if line 34 is more than line 33, enter 0)”. Line 33 is covered on New York Form IT-201 line 33.

Common mistakes
- Taking the larger of the two without marking which one it is. The booklet says “mark an X in the appropriate box, Standard or Itemized.”
- Itemizing without the supporting form. The booklet says “If you choose the itemized deduction, you must submit Form IT-196 with your return.”
- Picking differently from a spouse on separate returns. The booklet says “both of you must take the standard deduction unless both of you choose to itemize deductions on your New York returns.”
