Where’s My Refund? IRS Tracker: Three Stages and Timing

Updated October 24, 2026. Quick answer: The IRS refund tracker shows three stages: Return Received, Refund Approved and Refund Sent. Status is available 24 hours after you e-file a current-year return, 3 days after a prior-year e-file, or 4 weeks after a paper return, and the IRS updates it once a day, usually overnight.

What you need to check

The IRS page says “To use Where’s My Refund? you need to provide your Social Security number or individual taxpayer ID number (ITIN), filing status, and exact whole dollar amount of your expected refund.” The exact refund amount, Social Security number or ITIN, filing status and tax year are all listed on your own return, and the IRS says you can view a transcript in your online account if you do not have the return.

The three stages

The IRS says “The tracker displays progress through three stages:”

OrderStage name (IRS)
Stage 1“Return Received”
Stage 2“Refund Approved”
Stage 3“Refund Sent”

The tracker “will give you a personalized refund date after we process your return and approve your refund.”

When status first appears

How you filedWhen you can start checking (IRS)
E-filed, current-year return“24 hours after you e-file a current year return”
E-filed, prior-year return“3 days after you e-file a prior-year return”
Paper return“4 weeks after you file a paper return”
Prior-year return (About page)“3 or 4 days after you e-file a prior-year return”
Lost or stolen check: claim for a replacement“it’s been more than 28 days from the date we mailed your refund”

The IRS says it updates the tracker on a schedule: “We update these applications once a day, usually overnight.” The IRS adds that this means there is no need to check the status more often.

What is not in the tracker

The About page says amended returns are not shown: “Refund information for Form 1040-X, Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return is not available on Where’s My Refund?” It also says business returns are handled by phone. For the lines on the amended form see Form 1040-X lines 18 to 23.

If the refund is late or smaller

The IRS Refunds page names the usual causes of delay and says “Your refund may be reduced to pay prior taxes owed.” For the credit holds, see the 2027 refund schedule page, and for the refund lines on the return see Form 1040 lines 34 to 36 on refunds and direct deposit.

Common mistakes

  • Checking before the window opens. The IRS says status begins “24 hours after you e-file a current year return”, and a paper return takes weeks longer.
  • Entering a rounded refund. The IRS asks for the “exact whole dollar amount of your expected refund.”
  • Looking up an amended return here. The IRS says that information is not in this tool.
