How to use this page

A publication number is printed on IRS forms and notices (for example, a line that says to see Pub. 590-A). Open that page here to see what the publication covers before you read the full IRS text. The year in the IRS title shows which edition the IRS has posted; most of these are the edition the IRS lists as for use in preparing 2025 returns, and Publication 505 is the IRS’s 2026 withholding edition. The IRS page controls, and each page here names the date we read it.

For the forms these publications support, see Form 1040 and the Form 1040 worksheets. For a notice from the IRS, see IRS notices decoded.

Common mistakes

  • Reading a publication for the wrong year. The year is in the IRS title, and the IRS can post a newer edition after the one we read.
  • Treating a publication as the form. Publications explain the rules and hold worksheets; the form you file is separate.
