Does Missouri Tax Military Retirement Pay? (2026)

Updated October 4, 2026. Quick answer: No. Missouri’s instructions say to “enter your total military retirement benefits reported on Federal” Form 1040 line 5b on Form MO-A, Part 1, Line 10, and subtract it from federal adjusted gross income, with no cap or age printed.

How Missouri treats military retired pay

ItemWhat the documents say
TreatmentFull subtraction of total military retirement benefits reported on federal Form 1040 or 1040-SR, line 5b (Form MO-A, Part 1, Line 10)
Who is coveredPensions for service in the armed forces, including the Missouri Army Reserve and Missouri National Guard
Survivor Benefit PlanA Survivor Benefit Plan annuity does not qualify for this subtraction but qualifies for the public pension exemption
Cap or ageNone printed
Rate on other income2025 chart: 2.0% of the excess over $1,313 rising by bracket to $256 plus 4.7% of the excess over $9,191

A $30,000 example

A retiree with $30,000 of military retired pay on Form 1040 line 5b enters $30,000 on Form MO-A, Part 1, Line 10, so none of that pay is left to tax.
