Updated September 29, 2026. Quick answer: Box 14 codes A, B, E and G on a Schedule K-1 (Form 1041) are tax-exempt interest, foreign taxes, net investment income and foreign trading gross receipts. The form names the return line for each. The 2025 instructions give no separate paragraph for these four codes.
The four codes
The instructions read here are the 2025 edition of the IRS Instructions for Schedule K-1 (Form 1041) for a Beneficiary Filing Form 1040 or 1040-SR (Catalog Number 11374Z, dated March 13, 2025), the edition served at the IRS standing PDF address when read on September 29, 2026. They are written for the beneficiary; the fiduciary’s own instructions are in the Instructions for Form 1041. The form’s page 2 lists these Box 14 codes and where to report them:
| Code | Form label | Report on (form’s code list) |
|---|---|---|
| A | Tax-exempt interest | Form 1040 or 1040-SR, line 2a |
| B | Foreign taxes | Schedule 3 (Form 1040), line 1; or Schedule A, line 6 |
| E | Net investment income | Form 4952, line 4a |
| G | Foreign trading gross receipts (Section 942(a)) | See the Instructions for Form 8873 |
What the instructions say about them
The 2025 instructions have no paragraph for codes A, B, E or G, so the form’s code list above is the primary source for them. The instructions’ closing paragraphs do touch foreign tax credits: “If you receive a statement regarding the splitting of foreign tax credits from the income to which it relates, section 909 may prevent you from deducting the foreign tax credit until the related foreign income is taken into account.” “See Form 1116, Foreign Tax Credit, and Pub. 514, Foreign Tax Credit for Individuals, for more information.”
Net investment income is not the same as code H
Code E, net investment income on Form 4952, is separate from code H, the section 1411 adjustment. Code H is on its own page.
Common mistakes
- Looking for an explanation of code B or E in the instructions. In the 2025 edition the form’s page 2 is the source.
- Reporting tax-exempt interest as taxable. The form sends code A to the tax-exempt interest line, Form 1040 line 2a.
- Mixing up code E with the net investment income tax. Code E goes to Form 4952; the section 1411 adjustment is code H.
