Is Northwestern Mutual a Fiduciary? What Its Own Form CRS Says (2026)

Guides › Financial Advisor Fees

Updated September 18, 2026. Quick answer: Not in the SEC sense, but its own client-relationship document commits to something close. Northwestern Mutual is a federal savings bank regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, not an SEC-registered broker-dealer or investment adviser, so the Investment Advisers Act’s fiduciary standard does not technically apply to it. Its own Client Relationship Summary states: “When we act as your investment advisor, we have to act in your best interest and not put our interest ahead of yours.”

How it’s registered

From Form CRS (Client Relationship Summary) (Effective October 1, 2025): “Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company Federal Savings Bank | Regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency”

Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management Company is a federal savings bank regulated by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, not an SEC-registered broker-dealer or investment adviser. Its affiliate, Northwestern Mutual Investment Services, LLC (a separate legal entity), is the SEC-registered broker-dealer and investment adviser in the family. OCC-regulated banks acting in a fiduciary capacity are governed by 12 CFR Part 9, a separate federal framework from the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 that governs the other firms on this site.

The standard of conduct, in its own words

“When we act as your investment advisor, we have to act in your best interest and not put our interest ahead of yours.”

On commissions: NMWMC’s own Client Relationship Summary does not use the word “commission”; its advisors are paid a percentage of the ongoing advisory fee, not a per-trade commission, for the advisory services this page covers.

What this means for what you pay

Fiduciary status is one input, not the whole picture. Northwestern Mutual discloses a published fee that runs up to $8,250 a year on a $500,000 account (the published maximum); see the full dollar breakdown from Northwestern Mutual’s own fee disclosure before deciding whether the standard of conduct here changes your answer.
