Social Security Maximum Benefit 2027: $4,188/mo at Full Retirement Age

Updated October 16, 2026. Quick answer: the maximum possible Social Security retirement benefit for a worker retiring at full retirement age in 2027 is $4,188 a month, up from $4,152 in 2026, per the SSA’s 2027 COLA fact sheet (announced October 14, 2026); in 2026 someone who waits until 70 could receive up to $5,181 a month, per the 2026 fact sheet. This is a different figure from the Social Security taxable maximum ($184,500 for 2026 and $192,300 for 2027, covered on this site’s separate wage-base page): that figure caps what gets taxed and counted toward your benefit, while this one is the ceiling on the benefit itself, and only the small number of earners who hit the taxable maximum every year for 35 years can reach it. The 2027 fact sheet gives the full retirement age figure only, so no 2027 age-70 maximum is stated here.

Why this figure is rare in practice

The maximum benefit is the output of the full Average Indexed Monthly Earnings / Primary Insurance Amount formula under Social Security Act §215, applied to someone who earned at or above the taxable maximum for all 35 of their highest-earning years. It moves each year for two separate reasons: the annual cost-of-living adjustment applied to existing benefits, and the wage-indexing formula applied to a new retiree’s earnings history. SSA announced the 2027 taxable wage base ($192,300) and the 2027 maximum benefit at full retirement age ($4,188 a month) together on October 14, 2026. Unlike a contribution limit, this figure depends on each new retiree’s full 35-year earnings history, not a single indexed formula input.

The rates are already settled. Only the thresholds are still moving.

That is enough to plan against. A Roth conversion, a deferred bonus or a gain taken in 2027 can be sized today against the 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35% and 37% rates the statute already fixes, without waiting for the Revenue Procedure. If you want someone to price that decision against your own income rather than a projection, this is the point to ask.
