Updated August 3, 2026. Quick answer: Social Security disability benefits do not continue past full retirement age and they do not stop leaving you with nothing. They convert. The regulation ends disability entitlement the month before you reach full retirement age, and retirement benefits take over — normally at the same monthly amount.
What the regulation says
Your entitlement to disability benefits ends with the earliest of these months… The month before the month you attain full retirement age.
— 20 CFR §404.316(b)
Note the precision: the month before the month you attain full retirement age. The conversion is automatic. You do not file a new application for it, and there is no gap month to plan around.
Why the amount usually does not change
An SSDI benefit is computed much like a retirement benefit, and the disability years are not treated as ordinary zero-earning years in the way they would be for someone with no disability claim. That is why most people see the same figure arrive under a different name. It is a relabelling far more often than it is a cut.
What does change is the rules attached to it. This is the part worth knowing.
Three things that change on that date
- The work rules end. Substantial gainful activity, the trial work period and the reentitlement period are all features of disability entitlement. Once you are on retirement benefits there is no disability work test to fail.
- Continuing disability reviews end. There is nothing left to review.
- Medicare continues without the disability entitlement that started it, if you had it through 24 months of disability benefits.
If you claimed early retirement before this happened
Some people take reduced retirement benefits at 62 while a disability claim is pending, which changes the arithmetic in ways that are specific and are covered elsewhere rather than restated here.

Where to get an answer about your own record
Nothing on this page is a substitute for your own earnings record and benefit computation. The regulations quoted here are published in title 20 of the Code of Federal Regulations, which is freely readable, and your local Social Security office can tell you your conversion date. If a decision has gone against you, free legal help exists — look for a legal aid office or a protection and advocacy organisation in your state before paying anyone.
Honest gaps
Full retirement age depends on your year of birth and we have not tabulated it here. Benefit computation details, the family maximum, and how a disability freeze interacts with the top-35 calculation are beyond this page.
